Received a rent increase notice?

The City of Los Angeles COVID-19 Renter Protections are still in effect. The protections include a rent increase freeze on rent control (RSO) units. The renter protections have been effective as of March 30, 2020, under which rent increases are prohibited for rental units subject to the Rent Stabilization Ordinance (RSO) including until 1 year after the expiration of the Local Emergency Period which are in effect as of the publication of this post. For details on the original orders put in place, read the Ordinance 186607 and Mayor’s Order issued on March 30, 2020.

For units not under the Rent Stabilization Ordinance, State percent increase restrictions may apply, see State law AB-1482, the Tenants Protection Act of 2019, effective since January 1, 2020, provides that rents cannot be increased by a determined percent. See details of the bill for limits or percent increase allowed.

If you are a tenant or landlord in the City of Los Angeles wanting to verify allowable rent increase, submit an inquiry through Ask-Housing (housing.lacity.org/ask-housing), or call 1-866-557-7368.
